Doug Back

Doug Back has been creating and showing electro-mechanical sculptures since the late 70's. His works are seen frequently in exhibitions of new media art in both North America and Europe. In addition to his own artistic endeavors he has been inspiring and instructing young artists in these media as an instructor at the Ontario College of Art.

His wry commentary on making art in the information age is entitled "Small Artist Pushing Technology". It consists of a five inch video monitor on wheels hooked up to a motor so that it can travel around in a circle on the floor. The pre-recorded image on the monitor is a five inch person inside the monitor pushing on the screen. When the person pushes on the screen the monitor moves. When they stop, the monitor stops, when the person moves backwards the monitor moves backwards. The sculpture is controlled by a computer.
